Hi everyone!

Check out the article from Saanich News.

http://www.bclocalnews.com/vancouver_isl....ed_women__.html

HUGE thanks to Jo-Anne and Adrian for this inspiring opportunity, and to the four wonderful women (and their equally wonderful partners) for being at the launch and christening.

As Shakespeare wrote in The Tempest, I wish all the brave sailors "calm seas and auspicious gales", and have a great sail!

 Anti-dote Boat Christening - June 22, 2008
« Result #3 on Jul 2, 2008, 11:21pm »

Hello Anti-dote board, friends and family,

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the christening ceremony of the Zero class transatlantic single-handed sailboat after Anti-dote at the last moment. It was a very last minute notice of this event and not everyone got the email and could make the event.

Adrian's retirement business and passion has turned into a great fundraising venture for Anti-dote.

Enough members came out to make it an exciting photo shoot and fun ceremony at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club.

We had speeches, champagne, roses tossed off the bow, and the photographer from the Oak Bay News!!! The pictures attached show the boat without it's mast, but that will come.

Anti-dote will be heading off for its first single-handed race between San Francisco and San Diego in early July.

Ideas are percolating for exciting new fundraising initiatives for Anti-dote and there is still lots of time to get involved! Watch for announcements for opportunities during the summer to go out on the waters for a sail on "Anti-dote"

Shantelle will be organizing something through the gurlz club programs and Alison will be organizing something with Sistahs. Aunties, you'll have a chance too! Start organizing your life jackets now!

Friends and family are you ready for some excitement?

Does anyone else have photos they want to share?

Best,
Jo-Anne

URGENT- NEW Anti-dote BOARD MEMBERS WANTED
« Result #6 on Apr 8, 2008, 1:41am »

Hello dear members and supporters of Anti-dote!

As you know, our AGM is coming up. Alison Sum, Nichola Watson and I are members of the nominations committee.

We are looking for energetic, committed volunteers to join the board of directors, especially new Aunties and Sistahs.

We know this is very late notice, but we are what we are! Women with really busy lives, just like you.

If you are interested, please contact me by phone (598-8693) or email jalee@uvic.ca. No later than this FRIDAY!!!!

I will ask you for a short statement on why you want to join the board, and a brief description of your experience and training (what you think you can offer).
The nominations committee are looking for two or three names to forward to the members at the AGM (April19).
You can also attend the AGM and nominate yourself or someone can nominate you at the meeting.

The member at large positions are "training" positions. So don't be afraid to step forward.

Director at Large- - have voting rights
  • attend activities and programs
  • bring the voice of the Aunties/Sistahs to the organization,
  • responsible for promoting the organization
  • responsible for organizing an annual event for the Aunties
  • support Anti-Dote programs
  • to be available for assisting and organizing community events

We especially would like to invite anyone with Aboriginal background to join the board.

One of the best (and really one of the ways, at this point) to get involved in Anti-dote is to join the Board.

Our Board governance structure is really unique because it is participatory, inter-generational, and revolves, around sharing food.

Sandrina is the incoming President, but our fearless leader, Jin-Sun will still be present. We have a very stable leadership structure and we have lots of fun even thought we take our work very seriously.

There are some really exciting opportunities coming up.

Please consider lending us your passion, knowledge and time.

In good spirit,
Jo-Anne, Alison and Nichola

PS: Board meetings are open to all members. Check the website for dates, times and locations.

We will be hiring one Facilitator to work primarily with racialized minority girls, and the other Facilitator to work primarily with Indigenous girls, although both groups will also meet and work together.

The Gurlz Club Facilitator should be experienced and skilled in working with youth around culturally sensitive topics and have the ability to facilitate and develop the girls’ communication skills to address self-identified issues.

- Plan and create a schedule of activities with Project Coordinator for weekly sessions with youth that explore racialised minority and Indigenous identities, systemic racism, violence towards females and actions for change.
- Work with Project Coordinator to provide materials for a training manual for future facilitators including outreach, skill development/activities.
- Maintain safety and structure during youth group activities and outings.
- Encourage active participation and “learning by doing” for girls 10-16 years old.
- Identify and adjust to individual and group needs.

- Make arrangements for equipment and materials.
- Prepare registration forms and handouts for youth and parents.
- Prepare evaluation sheets for staff and participants.
- Track progress by maintaining weekly logbook of activities and monthly evaluation reports submitted to Project Coordinator.
