POSITION TITLE: Executive Director
We are looking for a professional, energetic self-starter with community development and not-for profit experience to help us promote, develop and deliver programs/ training workshops for a community based charity organization for racialized and Indigenous girls and young women. We invite all applicants but preference will be given to visible minority and Indigenous women. We ask that applicants self-identify in their letter of interest. Reporting will be directly to the Board of Directors.
Anti-dote's Mandate: To develop a network of members and volunteers of multi-racial and Indigenous girls and women to address the following purposes:
1. To address the issues racialized and Indigenous girls and women face in regards to discrimination, racism and exclusion in the region of Southern Vancouver Island (Victoria to Duncan). Members will have an opportunity to explore their experiences of racialization in a safe and nurturing space and also be provided a forum for members to share and inform the public. Using various mediums such as educational presentations, community showcases (theatre, photography, art, etc), workshops and participation in community and academic research projects to advance education and social society.
2. To provide training and skill development to address the cross-cultural barriers racialized and Indigenous girls and women face in obtaining the necessary skills to prepare for a career. Workshops will support cultural and language development; understanding of human rights related to discrimination; development of girls’ leadership to increase girls’ self-esteem; and career exploration. To ensure the relevance and usefulness of the training, our members will identify all skills training. Examples of training: life skills, leadership training, public speaking, financial planning, cross-cultural mediation, and educational support. To increase the psychological and social well being of racialized and Indigenous women and girls by providing a network of support through our Gurlz club, Women’s Discussion Series, International Girls club, and various initiative facilitated by our members. To also link them to the necessary and skilled service providers who are trained in cross-cultural communication, counseling and mediation.
3. To promote the broader visibility and needs of racialized minority and Indigenous women and girls in the greater community through project showcases, public awareness workshops and presentations in schools, service provider organizations (social agencies) working with racialized and Indigenous girls and women. To develop partnerships with various youth, community agencies, ethno-cultural, Indigenous, immigrant and refugee service agencies to generate knowledge, resources and capacity to address the issue of racism in the community.
4. To undertake University and community research partnerships to advance the knowledge of issues related to Racialized and Indigenous girls and women in the fields of Child and Youth Care, Women’s Studies, Education, Nursing, and Psychology. Research studies will advance the public’s understanding of human rights related to discrimination, cross-cultural relations, human development, multiculturalism, racism, and social issues.
5. To promote community development through participatory action approaches. Wherein, the participants identify issues they experience to focus on and then work together to come up with personal solutions to the problem. Thereby, empowering the participants to create change in their lives. Through the network, we will outreach to vulnerable populations and provide programming that will give them the tools to become active citizens in their community as a risk reduction strategy.
Qualifications:
Education: B.A. or B.S. degree in human social services or related field. M.A./M.S. preferred. May substitute 3 years experience for advanced degree.

Plans for and administers the organization to provide services to members in accordance with Anti-dote's stated mandate and purposes in such a manner that optimum results are achieved in relation to the resources of the society; operates under the general direction of the society's Board of Directors.
Key Responsibility Area: General Administration
Specific Duties: Recommends policies to the board and/or assists the board in the formulation of policies to ensure the society’s overall effective and fiscal health. Ensures implementation of policies adopted by the board. Has chief administrative responsibility for public accountability of the society, maintenance of society facilities and regular reporting to various bodies. Carries chief staff responsibility to ensure that legal obligations of the society are met. Locates a permanent space for the organization that meets the needs of administration and programs.
Key Responsibility Area: Financial Management
Specific Duties: Prepares society budgets related to physical, financial and human resources, and is accountable for control of these resources once approved. Directs all financial operations of the society. Participates in fund-raising activities by writing letters, making speeches, and stimulating activities of others in direct fund raising, and, may provide overall direction. Prepares and submits grant proposals to contribute to the long term sustainability of the organization.

Specific Duties:
Supervises and directs key staff members and interns/practicum students in the performance of their duties Evaluates the performance of key staff members; and provides overall control and direction for the personnel function of the society, including active participation in or approval of personnel actions.

Specific Duties: Evaluates the services being provided by the society in relation to specified goals and standards and recommends modifications, where appropriate. Recommends and/or provides input on proposed new programs.
Key Responsibility Area: Public Relations
Specific Duties: Interprets the function of the society to the community through direct involvement and through public relations programs, including personal contact, literature and the media. Recruits new members to society via workshops, speeches, and meetings.
Key Responsibility Area: Board Relations
Specific Duties: Develops and recommends to the Board of Directors specific, written, long and short-range plans for the development of society programs and services Maintains appropriate relations with the society's board and various board committees and keeps them informed. Interprets trends in the field(s) of service in which the society is engaged, by maintaining involvement in the professional field as a whole. Administers an orientation and training program for the board.
Key Responsibility Area: Community Relations
Specific Duties: Acts to maintain highly effective client relations under all society programs. Maintain appropriate relations with other professional and social service groups in the community and serves on appropriate community committees. Outreach to all youth groups for racialized girls Establishes a working relationship with school boards, counsellors and service providers in Greater Victoria to promote the society.
Relationships:
Internal: Board of Directors; key society staff.
External: Society coalitions; funding sources; federal, provincial and local government units; other Independent agencies in similar field of service.
This is a 3 month contract with the possibility of extension (dependent on funding). Interested applicants may submit a letter of interest , a curriculum vitae, and a minimum of 2 contact references from past contracts or employers to Anti-dote Selection Committee by April 5th, 2007. Anticipated start date is May 1st, 2007. The contracted has been budgeted for 15-25 hours per week for $25 per hour with a possibility for extension. There is a mandatory 3-month probationary period at the start of the contract.

- Three years of supervisory or managerial experience in human social services or related field.
- Proven experience with community development and not-for profit organizations.
- Demonstrated experience working with marginalized groups, in particular with girls and women Understanding and ability to work with girls, youth, and women in a community development and not-for profit setting. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to produce results in a short time frame.
- Understanding of Victoria’s non-profit sector and demographics as they pertain to racialized minority and Indigenous communities.
- Personal knowledge and experience as a member of a marginalized community an asset.
- Knowledge of intersectionality of race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, and age in marginalization. Capacity to work effectively with volunteer boards and committees.
- Aptitude to plan, monitor and evaluate budgets.
- Proven ability to supervise people.
- Ability to organize, plan and implement activities appropriate to further organizational goals.
